Embedding Skills for Life - accredited professional development opportunities beyond initial training

glasgow017

Lifelong Learning UK (LLUK) has developed a professional development  qualification at Level 5 of the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) for those in a full teaching role, who hold an appropriate teaching qualification and have personal skills in English and Mathematics at level 2 (QCF).

The professional development qualification focuses on embedded approaches and integrated practice to develop literacy, language and numeracy skills. A key focus is how literacy, language and numeracy teachers can work with teachers of other areas of specialism.

The qualification does not address the personal skills of teachers in English and mathematics. Teachers who do not have personal skills at level 2 in these subjects should undertake programmes of study to gain these skills.

Guidance for this qualification has been issued to awarding institutions for use in developing qualifications for teachers in the further education (FE) sector.

For teachers of areas of specialism other than literacy, language and numeracy, the new qualification is considered more appropriate than the current Level 3 Certificates in Subject Support and LLUK is considering whether these qualifications should continue to be available for teachers in a full teaching role who wish to develop their knowledge, understanding and personal skills in English and Mathematics. The current Level 3 qualifications in literacy, numeracy and ESOL will continue to be available for teachers in an associate teaching role and for learning support practitioners until other professional development opportunities are developed.
