World Skills 2011 Coaching for Excellence

World Skills is the biennial skills competition, where the most skilled young people from over 50 countries compete in 40 different disciplines. The competition moves around the world and will be in London in October 2011, just 9 months ahead of the London Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.

In the World Skills promotional video, Tony Blair comments that "hosting the 2011 WorldSkills Competition in London, just one year before 2012 offers the UK a unique opportunity to associate world class achievement in skills with world class achievement in sport and change public perceptions of vocational education and training - positively and permanently" (Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills, 2006).

Achieving the very high targets set for the UK requires a step change in the current system. Many of these changes involve revising competitions and this work is being led by the sector skills councils

How is LLUK involved?

Critical to the success of skills competitions are young people, who are well prepared by skilled staff. There is an excellent system of National Training Managers supporting the UK team members. However, there is no other system for ensuring that all skills competition entrants have access to suitably skilled teachers/trainers to help them achieve excellence.

Coaching for Excellence

In summer 2007, LLUK researched the skillset needed for teachers/trainers to support skills competition entrants. The results are published in the 'Coaching for Excellence' report, which identifies a best practice framework for success and contains an action plan detailing actions by stakeholders necessary to make this happen.
